FEATURE 63 HAVE A QUESTION? / FEEDBACK: email@example.com SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING RESOURCES Procedure: Weigh zinc nitrate hexahydrate (0.075 g, 0.5 mmol) and 1,4 benzenedicar- boxylic acid (0.014 g, 0.17 mmol) into a 20 mL glass scintillation vial with a teflon-lined lid. Add 8.5 mL of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and 0.16 mL of water to the vial and tightly cap the vial. Heat the reaction mixture in an oven at 100 °C for 12 hours to yield colourless cube-shaped crystals. Look at your crystals under the microscope to confirm their shape. Pipette a small sample of crystals on to a microscope slide and examine. Look at the structure below and discuss why the crystals should be cubes. Notes: 1. Keep the oven temperature between 90-100 °C to avoid excessive decom- position of the DMF solvent. 2. Do 2-3 batches of crystals as sometimes one reaction does not yield crys- tals or they are poorly formed.
